Victim Advocate
Job Purpose:

The Victim Advocate for the Domestic Violence Program of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma will be responsible for the planning, coordination and development of all activities related to the enhancements and expansion of services for victims/survivors of sexual assault. Also, the Advocate will work alongside the Domestic Violence Staff to assist with the coordination and management of other victims of crime such as domestic violence, dating violence, sex trafficking and stalking.

Job Duties:

• Responds to victims of sexual assault that have been identified by either the process of intakes, referrals or crisis calls.

• Maintain confidentiality of clients and all documentation related to each case.

• Prepare reports and collect data as needed for program evaluation and grant compliance.

• Provides case management services, conducting intake, safety planning, and conducting case management meetings to develop and update goals.

• Provide crisis intervention, resource/referral, and support to individuals seeking shelter, housing, legal advocacy, counseling, and other community resources.

• Provide community education through participation in community/tribal outreach events.

• Be available for on-call duty to provide direct services to clients identified as victims of domestic/sexual violence at local hospitals within service area. Provide accompaniment to law enforcement interviews and/or medical/forensic exams when requested.

• Assist victims/survivors in knowing their rights about obtaining a Protective Order and what to do when the order is violated.

• Determine appropriate services for incoming clients.

• Be thoroughly familiar with the policies and procedures guiding the work of this position in particular and the program or department overall. Perform job functions in line with these policies and procedures.

• Empower clients to achieve goals and make positive changes in their lives.

• Increase knowledge of local referral sources and ability to coordinate services with other providers.

• Maintains regular office hours and be on-call for meeting with victims/survivors to make it easier for the victim/survivor to initiate criminal proceedings or receive assistance. Be available for on-call duty to provide direct services to clients identified as victims of domestic/sexual violence at local hospitals within service area.

• In/Out of State Training as permitted by funding.

• Work with hired outside contractor to assist with the Domestic Violence Program Scan/Assessment. Gather and provide all needed documentation and data.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must work well with persons of varied racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, sexual preference backgrounds and with individuals who are differently-abled and must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as law enforcement reports, government or agency regulations and legal interpretations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and policy and procedure recommendations. Ability to speak effectively before individuals, public groups and employees of the organization.

• Mathematical Skills - Ability to calculate figures and amounts required to assist with budget management.

• Reasoning - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Assist families to resolve complex family situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Preference will be given to persons with the following or similar certifications: Certified Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Professional, State-Certified Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training Program.

Work Environment:

The employee work environment may have some hostile characteristics encountered while performing the primary functions of this job. Clients may be encountered in their home or other public spaces. The employee should have knowledge of techniques to deal with hostile clients.

This job will require some in-state and out-of-state travel.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Four (4) years of substantial relevant experience may be substituted for the educational requirement with a high school diploma or GED.

Preference will be given to persons with the following or similar certifications: Certified Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Professional, State-Certified Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training Program or SANE/SART (sexual assault nurse examiner/sexual assault response team)

Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with ability to meet Seminole Nation liability insurance requirements and maintain eligibility for insurance.

Must be able to pass background check, with no prior convictions and/or felonies.

Must be able to comply with the Seminole Nation Drug Free Workplace policies.
